old school entertainment – meet the new school. back in the day, kids (like yours truly) didn’t have super sweet gaming consoles and smartphones like we have today. so one method of entertainment for children?back then was to race electric slot cars – most of the time launching them across the room with the trigger-style accelerator.?now here it is 2010 and?imaginative?people like grant skinner are thinking of high tech diy projects to control simple electric toys, breathing new life into old fun.

skinner took adobe’s air software and built a desktop application and an android interface that detects the tilt of his smartphone. he interfaced the application on his macbook pro using a usb cord that fed into a phidgets motor controller, which then linked to slot car race track. so when grant tilts the android phone forwards it links with the macbook pro and causes the slot car to move forward. the farther he tilts the phone, the faster the car moves – kind of like a gas pedal on a car.
so thanks to a smartphone and some ingenuity, this goes to show that once again, another old toy has raced its way into being new again.
